Dana L. Stewart
Artist Statement
In the lyrical sculpture of Dana Stewart the beast in a stance portrays emotion. The gestures evoke a feelings; whimsy and light heartedness in some, lament, loneliness or alarm in others.
The viewer is invited to share in the sculpture by deciding what type of creature the beast may be. Dana stated, "If someone passes one of my sculptures and smiles I feel the making the sculpture was worth the effort."
Artist Biography
Dana Stewart was born, October 10th 1951, and raised in California, where he developed interests in art, animals and surfing. (Early sculptural works were executed in various materials including ceramic sculpture and welded metal). During his Master's program at San Diego State University, Dana met Herk Van Tongeren, who introduced him to ceramic shell bronze casting. Herk invited Dana to come east in order to do "research" at the Johnson Atelier. A two-week visit turned into 29 years (and counting)!
Dana's career evolved from being the head of the ceramic shell department at the Atelier in 1977 to operating his own commercial casting facility called Stewart Sculpture Casting in Lambertville, NJ where he produces his sculptures in bronze and provides the service to many other artists.
