The Pennington-based Straube Foundation showed impressive support for local teens last December, when it awarded the proposed Hopewell Valley Teen Center a $25,000 grant. The money is earmarked for educational classes in that center.

”While the community works through the planning and renovation of a building for the teen center, The Straube Foundation wants to begin immediately offering educational programs to Hopewell Valley teens,” said township resident Kim Bruno, mentor to the township Youth Advisory Board (YAB).

”The first class will be a SAT Prep class this summer,” Ms. Bruno said.

The Straube Foundation is hosting two open houses for the SAT Prep Class, from 10 a.m.-noon on June 19 and June 26.

The YAB has proposed a teen center on a 13-acre tract, owned by Capital Health System (CHS) in northwest Pennington, off Route 31 and West Franklin Avenue. Proponents of the center say it would be a temporary facility, for use until the Hopewell Valley YMCA reaches its goal of building a full-service community center on the same 13 acres.

The SAT Prep class will be held on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m.-noon, beginning July 10 and running through Sept. 25. “Taking this class over the summer will help prepare the student for the October SAT test,” said Mr. Bruno.

The class will focus on the three areas of the SAT: math, critical reading, and writing. It will cover test-taking strategies, comprehension of test materials and including SAT tests.

The instructor is Daniel Jetter, a tutor and SAT Prep instructor.

”The Straube Foundation will be underwriting most of the cost of the program, so students will only be charged $250 for the course which will also include textbook, tests, and software,” Ms. Bruno said.

The classes will be held at the Straube Center, 108 Straube Center Boulevard, Pennington.
