Abstract and Abstract Figurative Art by Chris Carter

Many years ago I traveled by bicycle with my paintbox firmly secured above the rear tire. I painted everywhere, leaning my canvas against a fire hydrant at a bus stop, between the bowls and cookie tins in a friend's kitchen, beside the ferris wheel along the boardwalk. Summer, spring, winter, fall .... I painted my life and the people around me.

My life changed. I became strictly a studio painter until 2004 when I began painting musicians and dancers in the local pubs. My desire to capture life as it was happening returned. I started painting at yoga classes and belly dance classes. I painted in dance studios and at performances. Now I am returning to the streets and the people who pass by. I feel a bit rusty but extremely happy. I will continue my studio painting with better balance in my life.

I paint primarily in watercolor and oil. My other mediums are gouache, acrylic, ink, pencil and mixed media. Diversity allows me to expand my graphic vocabulary and to explore new depths of visual expression in both paintings and drawings. My studio work is generally large, consisting of many layers of transparent paint and spontaneous marks that suggest and transform into figures and orbs. Most recently I have begun to explore a technique of the old masters with a few variations. I am painting underpaintings followed by layers of glazes, pushingcolor to its extreme. Please visit my illustrated blog Before The Curtain Falls to see works in progress and current completed works.
